ATPS is a multi-disciplinary network of researchers, policy makers and other end-users interested in the generation, promotion and strengthening of innovative technology/industrial policies in Africa. With a regional secretariat in Nairobi, and national chapters in 17 countries, ATPS aims to become a centre of excellence and brokerage between science and technology policy researchers and technology makers and implementers in sub-Saharan Africa. ATPS publishes a series of 'Technopolicy Briefs'.
ASARECA is a non-political organization of the National Agricultural Research Institutes (NARIs) of the ten member countries that aims to increase the efficiency of agricultural research in the region. Programmes include the R&D network FoodNet and the Eastern and Central Africa Programme for Agricultural Policy Analysis, ECAPAPA.
AFSTD was established by the NEPAD to promote the application of S&T for economic growth and poverty reduction. NEPAD is a pledge by African leaders, based on a common vision and a firm and shared conviction, that they have a pressing duty to eradicate poverty and to place their countries, both individually and collectively, on a path of sustainable growth and development, and at the same time to participate actively in the world economy and body politic. African leaders explicitly recognize that Africa's economic recovery and the transition to sustainable development will not be achieved without investments in science and technology.
This publication by Convergence of Sciences (CoS) documents some of the outcomes of its programme Strengthening agricultural innovations systems (SIS) in Benin, Ghana and Mali and its approaches and methods in enabling successful sustainable business opportunities for smallholders. Rather than focusing on technical innovations, CoS-SIS helps national, sub-regional and African agricultural research organisations, NGOs, universities and other public and private sector agencies, to strengthen and harmonise their programmes by identifying ‘scientific’ synergies. Most notably, CoS-SIS supports university curriculum development and informs decision makers at district and national levels about ways to encourage smallholder innovation. The bilingual booklet details such efforts in sectors like cotton, rice, shea butter, palm oil, cocoa, crop-livestock systems, and water management. Bill Tracy of University of Wisconsin-Madison, USA hopes to help organic farmers by breeding sweet corn that not only tastes good and yields well, but also competes strongly against weeds, naturally resists pests and diseases, and germinates early in the season. There may yet be another benefit. Unable to compete with the resource-rich breeding programs at private companies, public plant breeding programs at universities have been declining.
