Australian Masters-level Scholarship Awards

Deadline: 31 March 2013 As part of its development cooperation agenda in Africa, the Australian government is providing up to 380 Masters scholarships for eligible candidates from 28 African countries. These scholarships, commencing in 2014, are aimed at increasing the capacity of Africans to promote development in their home country and are focused on priority development areas including Agriculture and Food Security; Health; Natural Resource Management including Mining Governance; Water and Sanitation; and Public Policy. Call for candidates: 'Stage méthodologique d'appui à l'innovation en agriculture familiale', 6th edition

Deadline: 18 January 2013 The course is open to 20 participants. 14 scholarships are available from CUD and 6 additional places are available to candidates with an alternative source of funding for scholarship (CTB bursary, financing sought by your own care). Nominations must be send according to the selected option (with or without CUD scholarship) directly to the CUD or ADG. Partnerships for Enhanced Engagement in Research (PEER) Science

Deadline: 4 December 2012 The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the National Sciences Foundation (NSF) are working together to support the second cycle of Partnerships for Enhanced Engagement in Research (PEER) Science. PEER Science is a competitive grants programme that invites scientists in developing countries to apply for funds to support research and capacity-building activities on topics of importance to USAID and conducted in partnership with their NSF-funded collaborators. Areas in which both NSF and USAID have strong mutual interests include, but are not limited to, the following: Food security topics such as agricultural development, fisheries, and plant genomics;  Climate change impacts such as water sustainability, hydrology, ocean acidification, climate process and modelling, and environmental engineering;  Other development topics including disaster mitigation, biodiversity, water, and renewable energy. Call for proposals 6th Plant KBBE ‘Plant Alliance for Novel Technologies - towards implementing the Knowledge-Based Bio-Economy in Europe’

Deadline: 15 October 2012Plant-KBBE) is funded in partnership between ANR (Agence Nationale de la Recherche), the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness (MINECO) in Spain, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) in Germany and the FCT (Fundação para a Ciênca e a Tecnologia) in Portugal. This new 2012 call for proposals has been developed to promote competitive, novel plant production systems and agriculture in sustainable conditions. The objectives are to develop i) transnational cooperation in application-oriented plant genome research, ii) novel approaches for the improvement of crop plants and algae, and iii) their use in agricultural and industrial innovations. Focal points of Plant-KBBE are the application of research results in industrial practice, the strengthening of the competitiveness of the involved businesses, and the reinforcement of the cooperation between public research and industry. The 2012 call deals with ‘Food and Feed: crop yields and nutrition security in the context of climate change’. Research topics are: 1) Yield stability; 2) Plant health; and 3) Adaptation to pressures from the environment, phenotypic plasticity.

Call for Proposal: PhD research grants on climate change mitigation in smallholder agriculture

Deadline: 30 September 2012The Climate Food and Farming (CLIFF) Research Network is an initiative of the CGIAR Research Program on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS) in collaboration with the University of Copenhagen and Aarhus University. The aim of the CLIFF network is to build the capacity of young scientists, generate new and rigorous knowledge for climate change mitigation in small-scale farming and food systems and facilitate the sharing of this knowledge. For the current call, enrolled PhD students are invited to submit applications for research grants of up to USD 5000. The grants should support PhD research on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and carbon (C) sequestration associated with climate change mitigation in food production systems in developing countries. Specifically, these grants must be used to support field measurements, sample analyses and modelling related expenses.

PhD programme in Germany on Global Food Security

Deadline: 29 September 2012The Food Security Center (FSC) at the University of Hohenheim, Germany, invites applications for the PhD programme ‘Global Food Security. In 2013, FSC will award up to 20 PhD and post-doctoral scholarships to candidates from developing countries. Conducted in English, the PhD programme seeks to support development-oriented agricultural sciences as they relate to food security. TWAS Fellowships for Research and Advanced Training for Developing Country

Deadline: 1 October 2012The academy of science for developing country (TWAS) offers fellowships to young scientists in developing countries to enable them to spend between three and twelve months at a research institution in a developing country other than their own. The purpose of these fellowships is to enhance the research capacity of promising scientists, especially those at the beginning of their research career, helping them to foster linkages for further collaboration. The fellowships are for research and advanced training. They are offered to young scientists holding at least an MSc or equivalent degree. Eligible applicants for the fellowships are young scientists working in any area of natural sciences who are citizens of a developing country and are employed by a research institution in a developing country. There is no age limit however preference is given to young scientists at the beginning of their research career and those working in Least Developed Countries.

International Conference System Dynamics and Innovation in Food Networks

Dates: 18-22 February 2013Venue: Innsbruck-Igls, AustriaThis conference’s objective is to provide an interdisciplinary and creative discussion environment that generates new ideas for innovative and multidisciplinary research. Its focus is on the analysis of the food system dynamics and interdependencies; the identification of drivers for sustainable system dynamics in the decision sphere of the system actors (e.g. chain management, consumers, agencies, policy, etc.); and on the identification and promotion of potential system innovations.Call for papers deadline is 15 October 2012.

New project and call for evidence at EASAC: ‘Planting the future: opportunities and challenges for sustainable crop development’

EASAC – the European Academies Science Advisory Council – announced late July 2012 the new project to address genetics and the sustainable intensification of agriculture, covering science and technology in the context of EU food security and EU-global relationship. It is meant to explore the implications of alternative policy decisions on bioscience strategies in agriculture. One of the work streams is to collect evidence on the applications of molecular biosciences in agriculture in African countries.EASAC invites contributions of written evidence to this project, to be submitted by 30 September 2012.(EASAC, 24/7/2012)

Update: Announcement of Semi-Finalists -- CTA/ FARA/ IFS/ ANAFE/ RUFORUM/ NEPAD/ AGRA 3rd Africa Wide Women and Young Professionals in Science Competitions

The Expert panel for the 3rd Africa wide science competitions has selected the semi-finalists from among the 316 abstracts received in response to the calls launched in May 2012. During the second Expert Panel meeting which took place at FARA Secretariat in Ghana from 12-14 July 2012; 55 abstracts (26 for Women and 29 for Young Professionals in Science) were chosen using the established criteria; logic (10%), content (20%), communication (20%), impact (20%), innovation (15%) and originality (15%). A complete list of all the semi-finalists, their research topics and country of origin can be downloaded. All semi-finalists and other unsuccessful entrants have been informed of the outcomes of the selection process.

Impact Research and Science in Africa (IMPRESSA) Awards 2012 Competition

Deadline for nomination: 29 August 2012 The Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in Agriculture (RUFORUM) announces the 2012 Impact Research and Science in Africa (IMPRESSA) Awards competition. The objective of IMPRESSA is to recognize outstanding researchers and scientists who have made significant contribution in the field of agricultural research and science for development in Africa, including human and institutional development. The 2012 IMPRESSA Awards competition will be restricted to agricultural researchers and scientists from the 29 RUFORUM Member Universities.  Participation in the competition is by peer nomination. Vavilov Frankel Fellowships 2013 - Call for Research Proposals

AusAID launches new development research awards scheme in Africa

Consistent with AusAID’s development activities in Africa, research proposals will be considered in five thematic areas: Agriculture and Food Security Mining for development Peace, conflict and security Maternal and child health Water and sanitation Within these themes, research proposals will need to demonstrate that they respond to African priorities and agendas, and address issues of importance to African governments, researchers and communities.
