In the 1st new lead article “Food Safety Challenges: The Case of Aflatoxin”, Rose Njeru provides a comprehensive overview of current research and risk management measures for minimizing aflatoxin contamination. While research is ongoing to improve resistance, empowering farmers with knowledge and applying, enforcing and monitoring compliance with the strict food safety standards are proving successful in reducing the risks.
In the 2nd new K4D lead “Processing as a driver of agricultural development: the case of Makerere University Food Technology and Business Incubation Centre (FTBIC), Uganda”, John Muyonga, shares insights on how the FTBIC, is supporting his university’s efforts in creating a new breed of graduate agro-entrepreneurs as well as contributing to the evolution of the agro-processing sector in Uganda.
In the 3rd new K4D lead article “Building Capacity for Value Addition: The case of the Faculty of Food and Agriculture, University of the West Indies, Trinidad and Tobago” Neela Badrie, provides an exposé on recent efforts including strengthening international linkages for remodelling her institution so that it can serve as a state of the art agricultural and food research hub for the Caribbean region.
We encourage you to read the draft CTA/ASARECA policy brief on “Seed Systems, Science and Policy” which was developed through CTA support for selected universities in sub-Saharan Africa to undertake a SWOT of their contribution to integrated seed sector development and document their findings. The papers were presented at a CTA sponsored side event during the ASARECA General Assembly in Burundi in December 2013 and the draft policy brief was presented to private sector actors attending an ASARECA/EAGC workshop in Kenya in October 2014.
