Dem. Rep. Congo: Hanns Seidel Foundation (Mampu Project)

The Hanns Seidel foundation, in collaboration with its partner CADIM, has been managing an agroforestry project for the past 10 years in Mampu, on the Bateke plateau in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The objective of this project, financed by the European Commission, is to help boost local agricultural production to improve the living conditions of rural populations. The project’s main innovation is to incorporate Acacia auriculiformis into the crop rotation. Indeed, the acacia has the ability to fix nitrogen from the atmosphere at its roots thus returning it to the soil. This maintenance of soil fertility is, in addition, strengthened by the dispersion of residues from the work of transforming acacia trees felled at maturity into charcoal. Once buried, these small pieces of charcoal become a source of potash fertilizer, essential to tubers such as cassava, and organic matter for the soil. Additional information on the Mampu project is available on its website.
