Positive outlook for El Salvador’s sugar industry: Higher yielding sugarcane varieties, diversification of industry

El Salvador Sugar Annual 2004 Authors: Stephen Huete (approved); Miguel Herrera (prepared) Release date: April 2004 Source: USDA (United States Development Agency) Foreign Agricultural Service GAIN (Global Agriculture Information Network) Report Higher yielding sugarcane varieties, diversification of industry to produce energy and alcohol/ethanol, investment in milling equipment to improve sugar yields and additional access to the U.S. market due to CAFTA provide a positive outlook for El Salvador’s sugar industry in the 3 to 5 year term.   A National Sugar Law that regulates sugar production, distribution and marketing is an important component to the reengineering process that the industry is currently undergoing.  In addition, the sector seems to be recovering financially after facing debt complications due to natural disasters and lack of government policies to assist sugar farmers. However, ultimately the success of the industry will rely on compliance with the Sugar Law by all parties involved, continued improvement in sugarcane and sugar yields, and increased diversification either into additional energy co-generation projects or of excess production land into non-traditional crops that can provide higher incomes to sugar farmers (from the original executive summary).

Use and improvement of sugarcane germplasm - project collaboration between Australia and China

Australia and China constantly need new and more productive varieties of sugarcane in increasingly competitive world markets. Sugar industries invest heavily in breeding programs to maintain a steady flow of more productive varieties, but these programs rely on a relatively small number of key ancestors. Both Australia and China have a strong interest in introgression (the introduction of new sources of genetic material) to broaden the base in breeding programs. In this project scientists will undertake genetic characterisation (via DNA based markers) of an extensive collection of sugarcane-related germplasm collected from the wild in southwest China during the 1980s and 90s. This characterisation will guide sugarcane breeders in selecting for desirable traits such as high sucrose content, cane yield, and drought tolerance. They will introduce the traits by backcrossing selected exotic clones with elite parents and commercial varieties, with the aim of providing materials for core breeding programs in China and Australia.

SBI - Sugarcane Breeding Institute : world leader in sugarcane breeding

The  SBI based in Coimbatoire, Tamil Nadu, India, was the first in the world to attempt at evolving suitable sugarcane varieties for the sub-tropical parts of the country, while the other two then existing institutions in Java and Barbados were solely devoted to developing varieties for tropical conditions which was easier. Sugarcane Breeding Institute is a pioneering breeding institute in the world, works to evolve superior varieties of sugarcane to cater to the needs of the various agro climatic zones in the country. It became the world leader in sugarcane breeding. SBI is one of the two World repositories (the other being at Miami, Florida state, USA) of sugarcane germplasm. Independent and joint expeditions in collaboration with other national agencies for the collection of different species of Saccharum and related genera constitute an ongoing activity of the Institute. Further, SBO conducts research on new varieties, offers training and consultancies and has an easy accessible web site.

IISR - Indian Institute of Sugarcane Research

The Indian Institute of Sugarcane Research (IISR), was established in 1952 by the erstwhile Indian Central Sugarcane Committee for conducting researches on fundamental and applied aspects of sugarcane culture as well as to co-ordinate the research work done on this crop in different States of the country. In 1969, it was transferred to the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), in New Delhi along with other central agricultural research institutes. At its web site one can find details about technologies and varieties developed at the institute.

Caribbean: WICSCBS - West Indies Central Sugar Cane Breeding Station

WICSCBS is one of the two oldest sugarcane breeding Stations in the world with a continuous breeding programme since the rediscovery of seedlings in Barbados in 1888. It is serving the varietal needs of sugar industries in the Caribbean, Central Americas and Africa for over 110 years. WICSCBS has well developed physical facilities to carry out breeding for the supporting industries. Field research is done on 3000 varieties that are maintained on 16 hectares of land. A large crossing house, tissue culture and sugarcane quality testing labs and other facilities are available.

WSRO - World Sugar Research Organisation

The WSRO is the International scientific research organisation that represents the sugar industry globally. WSRO's objective is to monitor and communicate research on the role of sugar and other carbohydrates in nutrition and health. It has research bulletins, bi-monthly newsletters, organises major scientific conferences and symposia devoted to sugar, inviting internationally renowned academics, policy makers and members of the industry. WSRO is developing a database of scientific literature on sugar (and other carbohydrates), nutrition and health and other aspects of sugar such as its alternative uses, by-product utilization, technology, nutritive and non-nutritive sweeteners, environment and agriculture. The information is accessible to members through a password protected website.
