"Collaborations widen through ICPCNanoNet" is the fifth press release of the ICPCNanoNet project. ICPCNanoNet is a 4-year project, funded by the European Commission under the 7th Framework Programme, which aims to provide wider access to published nanoscience and nanotechnology research and opportunities for collaboration between organisations and scientists in the EU and International Cooperation Partner Countries (ICPC). This fifth press release reports on the free online workshops and website forum. Designer nano luggage to carry drugs to diseased cells

For the first time, scientists have succeeded in growing empty particles derived from a plant virus and have made them carry useful chemicals. The external surface of these nano containers could be decorated with molecules that guide them to where they are needed in the body, before the chemical load is discharged to exert its effect on diseased cells. The containers are particles of the Cowpea mosaic virus, which is ideally suited for designing biomaterial at the nanoscale. (Source: John Innes Centre, 10 March 2010)

Stress is good for nanofabrication

Controllable fabrication of complex, three-dimensional (3D) nanoscale structures remains a difficult challenge. Researchers are experimenting with a wide range of nanofabrication techniques, from top-down approaches such as mechanical machining to biomimetic replication of complex biotemplates to bottom-up fabrication using anisotropic self-assembly systems - to just name a few examples. New work at Johns Hopkins University utilizes the extrinsic stresses that develop during thin-film deposition - but can also be induced by external forces post-deposition - for the self-assembly of 3D curved and simultaneously patterned structures. ICPCNanoNet

ICPCNanoNet is a support action funded by the EU under FP7 for four years from 1st June 2008. It brings together partners from the EU, China, India, Russia and Africa and aims to provide wider access to published nanoscience research, and opportunities for collaboration between scientists in the EU and International Cooperation Partner Countries (ICPC). This is being achieved through an open access electronic archive of nanoscience publications (Nano Archive) and tools to facilitate networking between scientists in different world regions. ICPCNanoNet is coordinated by the Institute of Nanotechnology (UK) and includes Sociedade Portuguesa de Inovação (Portugal), St Petersburg Electrotechnical University (Russia), Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (India), Chinese Society of Micro-Nano Technology (China), MERIT, Universiteit Maastricht (Netherlands), Malsch TechnoValuation (Netherlands) and NanoAfNet (Africa). Nanotechnology and Africa

The August 2010 issue of NANO Magazine, highlighting nanoscale research expected to have a positive impact on the developing world, such as research focusing on energy generation, disease prevention and water purification. In one of the articles, Kathy Jo Wetter writes that despite supposedly self-evident claims to its ability to solve social and health problems in Africa, developments in nanotechnology should be met with serious critical reflection. In a discussion of what nanotechnology is and the risks associated with it, Wetter underlines that the technology offers new opportunities of monopoly control ‘over both animate and inanimate matter’, while government regulations worldwide remain completely inadequate to address its unique risks. EDES, or how to boost food safety in ACP countries

EDES is an ACP-EU programme funded by the 9th European Development Fund. It involves nine partners from France, the United Kingdom, Belgium and Denmark, and is working within a global framework of support of poverty alleviation through economic development. CIRAD is coordinating the programme's training component."Starting in 2011, we will be training 6000 people in the concept of food safety, in more than 35 countries " says Didier Montet, coordinator of the team of twelve CIRAD researchers working on the project. "We will be beginning in April with a course for ACP training staff. Some 20% of the work will be done in the private sector ".The aim is to improve the food safety of ACP foodstuffs exported to Europe. Such goods must comply with regulation 882/2004, which means bringing all these food products into line with European regulatory systems. The aim is to alleviate poverty in ACP countries by maintaining their access to the European, and also the local and regional, market.Specific modules have been developed for the following training sessions : food safety governance official controls good practice in international trade launch and monitoring of official control laboratories risk analysis and management communication on risks. New technique used to discover new viruses in poultry

In a search to find better ways to control viral enteric diseases in birds, US Department of Agriculture (USDA) scientists have unearthed a treasure trove of previously known and unknown viruses in poultry by using a powerful new molecular tool called metagenomics. Each year, disorders like poult enteritis mortality syndrome, poult enteritis complex, and runting-stunting syndrome cause diarrhoea in turkeys and chickens, resulting in decreased weight, mortality and increased production costs. Metagenomics detects the nucleic acid of thousands of organisms in an entire community. Using this technique, researchers at USDA Agricultural Research Service discovered a new virus that might have future antimicrobial applications. (AllAboutFeed, 5/6/2012)

Alternatives to antibiotics in animal health

Maryland, US), has devoted her career to developing alternative-to-antibiotics strategies to control infectious diseases in poultry. Through partnerships with industry, international scientists, and colleagues in the BARC Animal Parasitic Diseases Laboratory, Lillehoj has demonstrated the effectiveness of using food supplements and probiotics, molecules produced by cells of the immune system, and phytonutrients to fight poultry diseases like coccidiosis – a parasitic disease that causes annual losses of more than US$ 600 million in the United States and US$ 3.2 billion worldwide. Lillehoj is now applying similar technology to develop alternatives to treat enteric (intestinal) bacterial infections caused by clostridium, a pathogen associated with necrotic enteritis in poultry. Parliament rejects draft EU law allowing nanomaterials in food

On 20 March 2014, the European Parliament rejected the EC’s proposed definition of nanomaterials added to food products. Lawmakers decided that the proposed definition would have exempted foods containing nanomaterial additives that are already on the market from being labelled as such. The parliament argued that allowing the word 'nano' in brackets on the labels would confuse consumers and suggested that these additives are new, which would therefore make them 'erroneous and irrelevant'. In addition, a month ago the Parliament's committee for Environment, Public Health and Food Safety (ENVI) had stated that the Commission's 50% nano-particles threshold for an ingredient to qualify as 'nano' was much too high. This definition, they argued, disregards the European Food Safety Agency's (EFSA) advice of a 10% threshold in light of ongoing uncertainty regarding the safety of nanomaterials.   (EurActiv.com, 12/03/2014)

Scientists of Rice University, Houston, USA, traced the uptake and accumulation of quantum dot nanoparticles from water to plant roots, plant leaves and leaf-eating caterpillars. This comprehensive laboratory study, one of the first to examine how nanoparticles move through human-relevant food chains, found that nanoparticle accumulation in both plants and animals varied significantly depending upon the type of surface coating applied to the particles. The research is available online in the American Chemical Society's journal Environmental Science & Technology. (Eurekalert, 16/12/2014)

ICPCNanoNet workshop 2009 - Press release 2

The ICPCNanoNet partnership is opening its doors for the first annual workshop of the ICPCNanoNet project at Prague Congress Centre in the Czech Republic on Monday 1st June 2009. The ICPCNanoNet Workshop 2009 will take place under the Czech EU Presidency and immediately before the highly profiled EuroNanoForum 2009 conference, happening at the same venue.The workshop will focus on the results of the project´s first year, and will look ahead to the subsequent years. Seven guest speakers especially invited to this event will be highlighting specific nano-activities while stakeholders from all over the world will be able to follow the proceedings live via webcast. Attending the ICPCNanoNet Workshop 2009 is free of charge.The ICPCNanoNet Workshop 2009 will facilitate the required insight into Nanoscientific and Nanotechnological activity in International Cooperation Partner Countries (ICPC) and present a new online networking platform to increase and intensify the number of collaborations between the EU and ICPC in the area of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology.

ICPC NanoNet New publications archive and organisations database on nanoscience and technology launched - Press Release 1

In February, the ICPCNanoNet partnership successfully launched a new publications archive and organisations database in the area of nanoscience and technology, which marks the network´s official opening to the public. The archive and database exclusively cover all International Cooperation Partner Countries (ICPC) of the European Union and aim to provide wider access to published nanoscience and technology research and opportunities for collaboration between organisations and scientists in the EU and ICPC. The ICPCNanoNet urges researchers to share information on new publications in the established nano-archive and organisations to provide their details and research areas of interest in the user-friendly database.Research at the nanoscale has the potential to solve many fundamental scientific problems and lead to new developments in different disciplines and application areas such as medicine, electronics, energy, and the environment. Successful outcomes to such research will have a measurable impact on the future well-being of our global society; however this can only be achieved through improving access to information and opportunities for international collaboration. The ICPCNanoNet is one such initiative.The ICPCNanoNet project is funded by the European Commission under the 7th Framework Programme and aims to provide wider access to published nanoscience and technology research and opportunities for collaboration between organisations and scientists in the EU and ICPC. This will be achieved through a series of key activities, for which the project partnership has dedicated four years.
