Mauritius: Mauritius Sugar Industry Research Institute (MSIRI)
The mission of the Mauritius Sugar Industry Research Institute is to carry out high quality research and development on sugar cane and other crops that meet the agricultural, commercial, and societal needs of Mauritius. The Institute seeks to enhance its role as a centre of excellence. Today, technologies developed at the Institute have helped the industry reach an average annual production of about 600 000 tons of sugar from around 72 000 hectares of cane. Rwanda: Kigali Institute of Science and Technology (KIST)
The Kigali Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) is the first public technological institute of higher learning in Rwanda. It came into existence as a UNDP project on November 1st, 1997 with a clear mandate to produce technical, scientific, of high calibers. KIST opened with major degree program being offered in engineering. KIST's mission as laid down in its Statute is: To equip students with advanced skills with a view to increasing manpower and capacity for national development. To promote research, based on the disciplines offered at KIST. To disseminate the results of research through teaching, seminars, conferences, public lectures, publications and other appropriate means. To provide consultancy services to government, industry, the private sector and the community at large. To engage in income-generating activities with a view to creating awareness of lucrative investment. Sénégal : Centre de suivi écologique (CSE)
Le Centre de Suivi Ecologique pour la Gestion des Ressources Naturelles (CSE) est créé par les pouvoirs publics sénégalais, avec l'assistance du Programme des Nations Unies pour la Région soudano-sahélienne (UNSO) et le financement de l'Agence danoise de coopération (DANIDA,). Il a son siège à Dakar (Sénégal). La création de ce Centre entre dans la panoplie de mesures mises en oeuvre depuis les années 70 pour maîtriser les problèmes de la sécheresse et de la désertification dont l'une des conséquences majeures est la dégradation continue de l'environnement qui a fini par miner la base de production rendant particulièrement aléatoire la sécurité alimentaire. Aujourd'hui, le Centre de suivi écologique est devenu une association à vocation d'intérêt publique placée sous la tutelle du Ministère de l'Environnement et de la Protection de la Nature. Il regroupe l'Etat, les bailleurs de fonds (PNUD/UNSO), le Secteur Privé, les Collectivités Locales et le Personnel du Centre. Le CSE a pour mission la collecte, la saisie, le traitement, l'analyse et la diffusion des données et des informations sur le territoire, sur les ressources naturelles, en utilisant les technologies spatiales, en vue de l'amélioration de la gestion de ces ressources et de l'environnement.
