Call for nominations: The Crawford Fund Fellowship 2010

The Crawford Fund is now calling for nominations for the Crawford Fund Fellowship for 2010. The Crawford Fund Fellowship has been set up to provide further training for an agricultural scientist whose work has shown potential. This prestigious award provides an opportunity for the successful candidate to spend a period of focused study and training in Australia, with resulting benefits to the awardees as well as to their country’s agriculture and Australia. Candidates should be below the age of 35 and from a selected group of developing countries (Bangladesh, Bhutan, Burma, Cambodia, East Timor, Fiji, Indonesia, Laos, Nepal, Niue, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu, Kiribati, Vanuatu or Vietnam). The training will take place at an Australian institution and will emphasize the application of knowledge to increase agricultural production in the Fellow's home country. Identification of European academic actors interested in the Pacific region

The European Commission's Directorate General for Development (DG-DEV) wants to identify European researchers, students and universities interested in the Pacific region. The Commission feels that EU-based research initiatives in the Pacific are not well known and not widely accessible. To fill the gap, the 2006 EU strategy for the Pacific included stimulating European research in the Pacific as one of its objectives. ICGEB Biosafety Scholarships

The ICGEB, in the framework of its biosafety capacity building project for sub-Saharan Africa, is offering five fully-funded biosafety fellowships for a one-year MSc course 'Managing the Environment' (specifically the Risk Assessment of GM Crops pathway) at the world renowned Institute of Biological, Environmental and Rural Sciences, Aberystwyth University, UK. The prime objective of this initiative is to strengthen the ability of developing countries in sub-Saharan Africa to fully integrate into the worldwide effort to assure full and balanced consideration of biosafety issues in pursuing the appropriate uses of modern biotechnology in agriculture. JAFSCD Special topic call: Best practices in urban and peri-urban agriculture development

JAFSCD welcomes research or policy briefs, and case studies (up to 2,500 words) and full articles (up to 8,500 words) on best community-development practices related to: urban livestock management and regulation; urban market gardening and backyard gardening; marketing and value-adding; waste management and reuse; urban farming by immigrant or other special populations; farming on the fringe. Briefs, case studies, and articles should focus on illustrative programs or projects, survey results, literature reviews, and public policy that are related to — but not limited to — land-use planning and regulation, health ordinances or their implementation, training and educational programs, marketing systems or value chains, partnership development, systems approaches, issues of scale, and farm-neighbor relations. We are particularly interested in holistic approaches that combine community and economic development with environmental protection. Deadline: June 5, 2010

WIPO invites submission of papers on genetic resources

At its 15th session, WIPO’s Intergovernmental Committee on Intellectual Property and Genetic Resources, Traditional Knowledge and Folklore (IGC) invited Member States and accredited observers to make available to the Secretariat papers describing regional, national and community policies, measures and experiences regarding intellectual property and genetic resources. To facilitate preparation, translation and distribution as information documents for the next session of the Committee, participants are requested to submit their papers before 12 February 2010. The dates for the 16th session of the IGC have been provisionally set for 3-7 May 2010. Download the invitation.

Call for nominations for the Equator Prize 2010

The Call for Nominations for the Equator Prize 2010 officially opened on 11 January 2010. The Equator Prize is awarded biennially by the UNDP Equator Initiative for outstanding local, indigenous and community efforts to reduce poverty through the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity. Twenty-five winners will be selected to receive the Equator Prize 2010 and US$5,000 each. Five of these communities will receive special recognition and an additional US$15,000. “Special recognition” will be awarded in each region of prize eligibility (Africa, Asia and the Pacific, and Latin America and the Caribbean), one for indigenous peoples’ use of traditional knowledge, and one for ecosystem-based adaptation to climate change. Equator Prize winners are selected on the principal criteria of impact, partnerships, sustainability, innovation and transferability, leadership and community empowerment, as well as gender equality and social inclusion. TWOWS awarded Elsevier Foundation grant

The Elsevier Foundation, through its 'Women Scientists in the Developing World Awards' is supporting the expansion of the recently launched TWOWS Prizes. Thanks to Elsevier, TWOWS will now make US$ 5,000 awards to three young women scientists (one each in the biological sciences, chemical sciences, and the physical and mathematical sciences) in each of the four regions of the developing world (Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, and the Middle East) to a total of twelve awards. The expanded TWOWS Prizes scheme will ensure that talented young women scientists in developing countries are recognized for excellence within their own disciplines - and help to promote the overall participation and recognition of women scientists in the developing world. AWARD: Successful women, successful science call for applications

African Women in Agricultural Research and Development (AWARD), a project of the CGIAR Gender and Diversity Program, is accepting applications for its 2010 fellowships. The two-year fellowships aim to fast-track the careers of African women scientists and professionals involved in pro-poor agricultural research and development. African women working in agricultural research and development from Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Nigeria, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia who have completed a bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral degree in selected disciplines are invited to apply. Josef G. Knoll European Science Award

This science award has been presented every two years since 1986 with the aim of supporting young academics whose work focuses on helping to reduce hunger and malnutrition in developing countries. The award is named after Professor Dr. Josef G. Knoll, the pioneer of agricultural research in Germany with regard to developing countries. The objective of the award is to encourage young academics whose research concentrates on solutions to mitigate hunger in food deficit countries. The research findings must be user-oriented and suitable to contribute towards: improving the status of food and nutrition security of a certain local population and; reducing the impact of hunger (undernutrition and malnutrition). TWAS-DFG Cooperation Visits Programme

The TWAS-DFG Cooperation Visits Programme provides postdoctoral researchers from sub-Saharan Africa (excluding South Africa) with the opportunity to make a ‘Cooperation Visit’ to an institute in Germany of no more than three months. Under this programme, researchers are assisted in making a ‘Cooperation Visit’ to an institute in Germany. Such visits will have a duration of no more than three months and must be undertaken within twelve months of the award. The aim of the visit is to discuss research collaboration with German scientists, possibly including some preliminary experiments, with the ultimate goal of developing longer-term collaboration, perhaps through other DFG programmes. Deadline: 31 March each year.

Fifth World Cowpea Research Conference: Call for papers and submission guidelines

A call for papers is now open for the 'Improving livelihoods in the cowpea value chain through advancement in science' conference in Dakar from 27 September to 1 October 2010. Papers are called for on the topics; genetic improvement; cowpea grain and seed storage; processing and enterprise development; plant health management; human nutrition and health; cropping systems and agronom; molecular tools; economics and technology transfer; crop-livestock integration; seed systems. Abstracts should clearly state the purpose, results, and conclusions of the work to be described in the final paper, be of no more than 300 words. Deadline: 15 April 2010.

ProSPER.Net-Scopus Young Researcher Award 2010

The Prosper.Net-Scopus Young Scientist Award in Sustainable Development is given annually to young scientists or researchers, based in the Asia-Pacific region, who have made significant contributions in the area of Sustainable Development. For 2010, awards will be given in each of four areas: Energy, Water, Agriculture & Food Security, and Economics, Business, & Management. Ernesto Illy Trieste Science Prize 2010

TWAS, the academy of science for the developing word, is seeking nominations for the 2010 Ernesto Illy Trieste Science Prize. The Prize, sponsored by Trieste-based illycaffè, has been established to give international recognition and visibility to outstanding scientific achievements made by scientists living and working in the developing countries. TWOWS Postgraduate Training Fellowships

Postgraduate Training Fellowships for Women Scientists from Sub-Saharan Africa and Least Developed Countries (LDC) at Centres of Excellence in the South. The Fellowship is offered to women scientists to pursue postgraduate research in a field of the natural sciences. This fellowship programme is for female students from Sub-Saharan Africa or Least Developed Countries (LDCs) who wish to pursue postgraduate training leading to a doctorate degree at a centre of excellence in the South outside their own country. Communicating research for utilisation (CRU): Specialist professional and institutional capacity building in Africa

Food Security Center (FSC, Germany) offers up to 29 research scholarships in 2010

The Food Security Center (FSC) is a newly established university center of excellence in development collaboration at the University of Hohenheim, Stuttgart, Germany. FSC is one of five excellence centers of the program “exceed – Higher Education Excellence in Development Cooperation”, which is supported by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) with funds of the Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) of Germany. FSC’s mission is to make effective and innovative scientific contributions in research, teaching, and policy advice to eradicate hunger and achieve food security in collaboration with partner Higher Education Institutions in Africa, Asia, and Latin America and national and international development and research organizations. Africa - One fellowship in ecosystem and population health

The African Research Consortium for Ecosystem and Population Health is seeking to appoint eleven post-doctoral research scientists to its prestigious 4-year fellowship program. The Consortium comprises eleven African Universities and Research Institutes in Chad, Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana, Senegal, Tanzania, and Uganda, and is funded through the Welcome Trust’s African Institutes Initiative. Fellowships come with competitive salaries and substantial research support budgets that include graduate studentships, technician salaries, travel funds, and consumables. Applicants must be able to take up the position by September 1st 2010.

The CUD scholarship programme

Within the programme for international courses and training programmes 2010-2011, 150 scholarships will be granted for participation into the courses and 70 for participation into the training programmes. On the site one may find a list of international courses and training programmes for which there is a possibility of scholarship.
