Researchers seek climate change-proof food crops : Opening of the Call for Proposals 2010

As climate change already is affecting agricultural output in large parts of Africa, there is now a need to develop new food crops that can adapt to the new conditions. A recent initiative, launched by the International Treaty on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGRFA) is promoting research that can develop food crops able to resist these tougher climatic conditions. ITPGRFA, an FAO agency dedicated to food and agricultural plant genetics, released US$ 10 million in a call for project proposals. This is the second time ITPGRFA funds scientific projects to develop climate change resistant food crops. This new call for Proposals under the Benefit-sharing Fund of the International Treaty is now opened for its biennial cycle (2010-2011). Any governmental or non-governmental organization, including genebanks and research institutions, farmers and farmers' organizations and regional and international organizations, based in countries that are Contracting Parties eligible for funding, may apply for grants until 8 September 2010.

Call for case studies: Adaptive Collaborative Management in Agriculture and Natural Resource Management

This call invites proposals for case studies to be included in an edited book that seeks to tell the story of how adaptive collaborative approaches have emerged and played out in different contexts of Agriculture and Natural Resource (ANR) management and governance. Six case studies will be selected from different contexts to highlight opportunities and challenges as to how diverse sources of knowledge – formal research, indigenous knowledge, practical sense, tacit knowledge – can be blended (or what constraints they face) to inform effective system of innovation in ANR sectors. The six case studies will provide in-depth accounts of how traditional practices of research and development have been subjected to external pressures for adaptive collaborative approaches to management, and how ANR actors have responded to the changing contexts of resource governance. Key questions to be addressed by the case studies are: how did adaptive collaborative approaches have emerged and put into use (marking a shift to ‘research into action’ from ‘research and extension’ approach); what were the challenges along the way; what helped, and what held it back; over time, how did this family of approaches mature; and what outstanding challenges remain? For more information contact Dr Hemant R Ojha (ojhahemant1@gmail.com). Deadline: 15 June 2010

Call for Research Notes and Invitation to Proposal Writing Workshop on Neglected and Underutilized Species of Plants

Neglected and underutilised plant species (NUS) include hundreds of locally domesticated and wild species, which are rich in nutrients and adapted to low-input agriculture. NUS and their traditional production systems can play a key role in supporting rural livelihoods. They are important in strategies to alleviate the effects of biotic and abiotic stresses – particularly those related to climate change. Their commercialization can provide income opportunities and many NUS species are important in traditional pharmacology. Due to the intensification of agriculture and the commoditization of food markets towards a narrow range of the most important food crops, diversity of NUS and associated local knowledge is rapidly being lost. Research, therefore, on NUS needs strengthening. When: July 12 – 16, 2010 Where: Cotonou, Benin Deadline: 20 May, 2010 For whom: Prospective applicants for IFS Research Grants from Benin, Ghana, Mali, Nigeria & Senegal For more information see the attached word-document
