Research on pastoral meat value chain Deadline: 30 April 2013 The University of Nairobi, the National Museums of Kenya and the German Institute for Agriculture in the Tropics and Subtropics (DITSL) are offering:- 4 PhD scholarships for Kenyan applicants on topics related to pastoral meat value chains- 1 PostDoc position (3 years, for candidates from any country) on transdisciplinary research to reduce post-harvest losses and to add value in (animal) food value chains, based at DITSL / University of Kassel, Germany, as part of the subproject 'Transdisciplinary research: Stakeholder processes, knowledge integration and collaborative learning'.The PhDs and PostDoc will take part in the GlobE (Global Food Security) project RELOAD: 'Reduction of Post Harvest Losses and Value Addition in East African Food Value Chains' funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). This collaborative project builds a research network between partners in Germany, Kenya, Ethiopia and Uganda.

Dates: 6–10 May 2013   Venue: University of Nairobi, Chiromo Campus, Kenya   Deadline: 1 May 2013   This is an intensive, 5-day course, organised by the Training Centre in Communication (TCC), during which participants will learn about: Writing technical communication, inc. reports, theses, scientific papers, reviews; scientific papers for publication in international peer-reviewed journals, preparing and giving different forms of oral communication for different audiences, preparing posters, writing proposals, communicating in science (conferences, preparing applications, reviewing the  work of others), analysing and presenting technical data using graphical methods, designing  research projects, managing projects for scientific and international organisations, matters of style in technical communication, communicating to non-experts.  http://www.tcc-africa.org/tcc/

Call for concept notes: Collaborative Adaptation Research Initiative in Africa and Asia (CARIAA)

Deadline: 4 April 2013   IDRC and the UK’s Department for International Development (DFID) are funding a new programme on climate change adaptation. The Collaborative Adaptation Research Initiative in Africa and Asia (CARIAA) began in 2012 and will run until 2019. Competitive call for innovative (smallholder) farmers for Eastern African Farmer Innovation Fair

Deadline: 8 March 2013   The Week on Agricultural Innovation Systems in Africa (WAIA) revolves around a regional fair to celebrate the innovativeness of smallholder farmers: the Eastern African Farmer Innovation Fair (EAFIF) to be held 28–29 May 2013 in Nairobi, Kenya. Four Prolinnova County Platforms in Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda are leading initiatives in their respective countries to identify innovative farmers and to help them prepare for the fair. This  competitive call is inviting farmers or their contact organisations to apply to take part in the EAFIF. The top 15 women and men innovators will be selected to go to Nairobi. The Week on Agricultural Innovation in Africa (WAIA) starts in only three months. It revolves around a regional fair to celebrate the innovativeness of smallholder farmers: the Eastern African Farmer Innovation Fair (EAFIF) to be held 28–29 May 2013 in Nairobi, Kenya.Four Prolinnova County Platforms in Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda are leading initiatives in their respective countries to identify innovative farmers and to help them prepare for the fair. Below hyperlinked is the announcement prepared by Prolinnova–Ethiopia together with the Agri-Hub Ethiopia of the AgriProFocus network, inviting farmers or their contact organisations to apply to take part in the EAFIF. This is a competitive call; the top 15 women and men innovators will be selected to go to Nairobi. Priority will be given to women innovators. The focus is on the achievements of smallholder farmers – a term used in a wide sense to include pastoralists, agro-pastoralists, forest dwellers and fisherfolk – in experimenting and innovating to improve their livelihoods and those of their communities. Please study carefully the selection criteria listed in the guidelines and include relevant information in the application. Call for pre-proposals: Agricultural Innovation Marketplace

Call for pre-proposals for small grants connecting agricultural researchers in sub-Saharan Africa and Brazil is now open. You could benefit from up to USD 80,000 funding and exchange germplasm, innovative knowledge, and technology with counterparts at Embrapa, Brazil, learning from each other’s approaches to increase agricultural productivity.  Pre-proposals are due to the Africa--Brazil Marketplace (http://www.mktplace.org) by 28th February 2013 and require only short two page project descriptions.For guidelines on submission, including the thematic areas that will be considered, download the Marketplace Pre-proposals Guidelines. Submissions that focus on maize, rice, sorghum, millet, cassava, yams, sweet potatoes, groundnut, cowpeas, beans, cattle, goats, or chickens are especially encouraged.Early applications are advised to allow plenty of time to identify Embrapa partners and to develop your pre-proposal in collaboration. Earlier rounds of these small grants have enabled exchanges of germplasm, people, and ideas between Brazil and Africa.
