AGRA - Program for Africa's Seed Systems (PASS)

The Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa’s (AGRA) Program for Africa's Seed Systems (PASS) provides higher yielding seeds to increase food productivity in the continent and to better the lives of the farmers and their children. PASS supports country-level crop breeding teams who work closely with farmers to develop new varieties. PASS then funds and trains local entrepreneurs who establish and grow private, independent seed companies to produce and distribute the seed. It operates through four integrated sub-programs across the seed value chain: Education for African Crop Improvement (EACI); Fund For The Improvement and Adoption of African Crops (FIACC); Seed Production for Africa (SEPA); and, Agro Dealer Development Program (ADP).   http://www.agra.org/what-we-do/seed/

ASARECA - Improved indigenous vegetable seeds boost household incomes, nutrition

In 2008, pilot efforts by ASARECA, CABI and the Kenya Seed Company provided training to farmers on minimal use of pesticides, harvesting, seed extraction, and seed marketing. The outcome was that seed yields increased by about 60-70% for the farmers participating in the training. Following up on this encouraging outcome, and to change the status quo of the sector, ASARECA, CABI and other partners in Kenya and Tanzania initiated the project, “Scaling up farmer-led seed enterprises for sustained productivity and livelihoods in Eastern and Central Africa.” The aim was to evaluate three farmer-led African indigenous seed enterprise models to generate evidence-based and rigorously analyzed models for economically sustainable enterprises to improve seed production in the region. Here a description of these models is given together with other facts and figures.  http://www.asareca.org/content/improved-indigenous-vegetable-seeds-boost-household-incomes-nutrition

International Seed Testing Association (ISTA)

Founded in 1924, with the aim to develop and publish standard procedures in the field of seed testing, the ISTA is inextricably linked with the history of seed testing. It has member laboratories in over 70 countries worldwide. ISTA members work together to achieve their vision of 'Uniformity in seed quality evaluation worldwide'.  The Association produces internationally agreed rules for seed sampling and testing, accredits laboratories, promotes research, provides international seed analysis certificates and training, and disseminates knowledge in seed science and technology.
